We are learning to speak Spanish

In October 2010, we met some local Hispanic families who have lived in our hometown for years. In total, there are five families whom we have grown to love in the last year. They have definitely taught us much more Spanish than we have taught them English, but most of them were pretty fluent in English already. And they have been self taught too. Very impressive.

We have already learned quite a bit of Spanish and we usually learn a new word or phrase every week. This will help us greatly when we travel to Colombia, where pretty much everyone we come into contact with will not speak English, including our adopted sons.

In addition to learning the Spanish language, we have also learned a lot about the culture in Hispanic families and their homes. Hispanics are typically conservative individuals, and they all believe in working very hard. Typically, the wife/mother in the family stays home to cook and clean and take care of the children. The fathers are tasked with being the primary bread winners for the family financially. The families are very welcoming to other families, like ours, who want to learn more about the Hispanic culture and the Spanish language. Plus, their food is amazing! It is like eating at an authentic Mexican restaurant each time (only better) every time we get together. It helps if you like hot/spicy food too!
